Profit factor vs expectancy: which trading journal metric answers which question?
Profit factor divides gross profits by the absolute value of gross losses over a defined sample. Expectancy describes average net outcome per trade. They answer different questions and neither alone m

Not just a journal: markets, execution, risk and review in one workflow.
Disciply combines MT5 data, market tools, execution controls and behavioral analytics. The value is not one feature; it is the connection between context → decision → execution → journal → review.
Market workspace, charts, price alerts, Market Breakdown, calendar/context, Market Bias and volatility context available in the market workflow.
Group breakeven, profit protection, SL/TP management across multiple positions with preview and broker checks, plus partial close where supported.
Distribute limit orders inside a range while reviewing order count, size and total exposure before sending them to the connected account.
Sizing proposals using history, session, asset, current risk, exposure and broker volume specs; guardrails reduce size when conditions deteriorate.
Orders, protection and position management linked to the active account, with level, tick, minimum-distance/freeze checks and confirmation before execution.
Practical procedure
Use the same date range, account and trade definition. Reconcile partial closes and commissions first: treating every MT5 deal as a separate complete trade can distort expectancy's denominator.
Common mistakes
Profit factor may be undefined when there are no losing trades; that does not establish a perfect strategy. Expectancy can be dominated by a handful of unusually large winners or losers.
Verification checklist
Inspect sample size, costs, maximum drawdown, asset concentration and consistency of initial position risk. Compare median outcomes and their distribution rather than trusting two headline ratios.

Interpreting the outcome
A high profit factor driven by one exceptional session may be fragile. Positive average expectancy does not justify drawdown that breaks account constraints or risk limits.
Limitations and sources
Disciply publishes this comparison as a trading journal provider, not as an independent product auditor. Past outcomes and ratios never guarantee future returns.
