Inside this article
What to verify
When CPI, employment or PCE data is released, compare the reported value with the prior consensus and any revisions to earlier observations. Reading only the headline number can lead to premature causal claims.
Practical procedure
Before publication confirm the official calendar, exact timezone, data series and agency. Keep consensus, previous and actual values in separate fields; a revision to the previous reading is not the same as a new surprise.
Common mistakes
An above-consensus figure does not mechanically send gold, USD or equity indexes in one direction. Markets may have priced expectations already, and an initial reaction may reverse.
Verification checklist
For reaction studies use completed timestamped candles with coherent symbol, exchange and source. A futures proxy is not an executable broker CFD quote. If timing alignment is missing, label causality unverified.
Interpreting the outcome
Risk planning should address possible spread widening, slippage, gaps, stop placement, aggregate exposure and explicit no-trade conditions. Missing confirmation is a valid reason to avoid a rushed macro entry.
Limitations and sources
Official primary references include BLS, BEA, the Federal Reserve and the US Treasury. This explainer does not claim that a particular release has already occurred today.
