Inside this article

The Bank of Japan rate hike did not produce a simple one-way reaction in the yen. After rates were raised to 1.25%, Reuters reported USD/JPY around 157.48 as markets also watched for possible currency intervention.

The latest COT adds another layer. In positions as of September 22, 2026, non-commercial traders held 192,274 yen futures longs and 120,292 shorts, leaving a net long of about 71,982 contracts.

Using the CFTC weekly changes, the previous week's net long was roughly 120,359 contracts. Net speculative length therefore fell by about 48,377 contracts in one week.

Most of the change came from long liquidation rather than an aggressive surge in shorts. That points to weaker conviction in bullish yen positioning rather than a fully developed new bearish consensus.

Why USD/JPY can rise after a BOJ hike

A rate increase does not operate in isolation. Markets compare the decision with what was already priced and with the relative policy path in the United States. If the BOJ hikes but does not surprise on the hawkish side while the Fed remains restrictive, the dollar can retain a relative yield advantage.

That is where price and positioning connect: COT shows less conviction in yen longs while USD/JPY remains sensitive to intervention risk.

What cannot be inferred

The fall in net longs does not guarantee another USD/JPY rally. Intervention risk also does not mean intervention will occur. COT is a Tuesday snapshot and FX can reprice quickly around policy communication and liquidity.

For CFD traders, the useful lesson is to avoid the shortcut “BOJ hikes = yen rises.” The market reaction depends on what was already priced.
