What happened
XAUUSD started Monday under pressure after Friday had shown a failed upside expansion and a strong New York rejection. During the first hours of Monday, price quickly broke Friday's low and continued building lower prices through Asia and London. New York then produced another acceleration into the session lows.
The move
The defining feature was not a single candle but the persistence of the expansion. The break of the prior range was not absorbed: the market continued to build lower highs and lower lows and pressure remained present across multiple sessions. The US acceleration came after the move was already well developed.
Before the move
Friday had shown an attempt to recover toward the upper part of the range followed by significant rejection. The close had not yet produced a structural breakdown. Monday turned that fragility into directional imbalance by breaking lower references and building acceptance below the prior range.
News / catalyst
The sell-off coincided with a broader deterioration in the macro backdrop. Elevated Treasury yields, a firm dollar, higher oil prices and stronger expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening created an unfavorable environment for Gold. The move had already begun in Asia, so it is not attributed to one single US macro release.
Price structure
H1 structure shifted from range/transition into a clear bearish imbalance. The break of Friday's low was followed by continuation rather than a rapid return into the old range. H4 also showed a sequence of lower directional blocks into the US session.
Liquidity
Friday's low was the first major lower reference. After the break, price failed to rebuild acceptance above it. Additional structural lows were then violated. The behavior is therefore more consistent with a breakdown than with a simple sweep.
Session and timing
Asia initiated the expansion and broke the prior range. London continued the move instead of absorbing it. New York showed a brief stabilization first and then produced a second strong acceleration. Alignment across the three sessions was one of the most important features of the day.
Volume / volatility
The available volume belongs to the feed used by Disciply and does not represent centralized volume for the whole spot Gold market. As a relative measure within the feed, activity increased during several phases of the expansion, especially during the final US leg.
The Disciply perspective
Treasury yields at multi-year highs, a firm dollar and expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening created an unfavorable backdrop for Gold. Rising oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions added to inflation concerns. The combination of yields, oil and rate expectations was consistent with the pressure observed on the metal, without implying certain causality for each candle.
What this move teaches us
September 28 is a particularly useful case study for distinguishing a simple liquidity violation from a true breakdown with acceptance. Price broke the prior range low, stayed below it, continued across multiple sessions and accelerated again during New York. The educational value lies not in predicting the sell-off, but in recognizing how post-break behavior progressively increased the quality of the move.
